Useful Content Ideas for September (FREE calendar download!)
Summer has flown by, school has started, and somewhat normal routines commence as we barrel fast toward to fall. Can you smell the pumpkin spice in the air?
Jokes aside, every month presents new opportunities to plan and execute content to grow your business. The key is planning ahead so that something great doesn’t slip by without your knowledge. Your monthly content calendar should include a mixture of the following each month:
National holidays and special days
Business specific days/sales/announcements
Everyday events
National holidays and special days are a useful tool when creating content. Holidays are a great way to connect with your audience over a shared event. Holidays can provide a great conversation starter on social media, and it can enable you to reach new followers. Useful national holidays are ways for your followers to connect with because naturally you will gravitate to things that are relevant to you. These days are often fun excuses to generate content. They can also be more important and reverent occasions like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and the like.
It’s important to not overdo it with national holidays. Let me give an example. I stumbled onto a social media profile of an elected official once. Curious about the strategy they would utilize, I followed them for research purposes. (We follow a lot of profiles for research.) Every single day of the week and often weekends, there was a new “day” post of something that was being recognized. Literally every single day the social media manager for this profile was recognizing something else – a group, a culture, a religion, an organization, a food, a color, etc. Every single day there was a new post for a special “day.”
There are pros and cons to this strategy. On the one hand, they get an A for consistent content. On the other hand, the content was wildly unrelated to the purpose of the profile. Additionally, when you recognize every single thing under the sun, you’re really not recognizing anything at all.
Holidays and special days are a great content tool when not overused and weaved in naturally with other more relevant content. Here’s a link to an extensive monthly list of random and unique days.
Business specific days/sales/announcements are a second, useful tool to offer quality content on social media. Depending on your specific business, you will plan content related to any sales, announcements or new offerings at your business. If you’re a small boutique, your content will be based on when you have a new release of clothing or items for sale. If this happens weekly, you can plan content for these specific times well in advance. If you offer in person appointments or visits of some kind, you can strategically announce special offers throughout the month.
Everyday events such as a personal introduction, a special tip, or piece of useful information should be spread throughout the month. Periodic introductions to who you are and the type of service you offer is necessary especially as you gain new followers from time to time.
