4 Ways to Boost Your Social Media Engagement
When you first start your small business, it can be an exciting and frustrating time. There are so many moving parts. Some of the work you love and some of it is just downright boring. Social media can be fun, but can also be a black hole of time used that doesn’t produce a lot when you first start.
You might think “I post every single day, but no one comments or shares or even likes it. So what’s the point?”
Consistency is key in social media marketing. Keep showing up. Keep posting what you love and enjoy. What you love and enjoy translates across many social media barriers and the right followers will find you.
Build better brand awareness. Plan your content to include regular posts about your business and what you offer. Sprinkle in posts about who you are as a business owner and individual. Your social media should provide a consistent image across all platforms of your brand. Colors, logos, taglines, word marks and anything else unique to you should be used on all platforms. Cross-posting makes this much more simple to accomplish.
Action steps:
Make sure your website, Instagram, Facebook, and any other platform represent your brand with use of all logos, word marks, taglines and images.
Check all your social media profiles to be sure your contact information is accurate and up to date.
Create a post that shows all the social media platforms you use and post it to each location.
Develop meaningful relationships. Ask for customers, friends, family and everyone you know to follow you. Most people prefer to do business with small business owners especially if they know you personally.
Ask for the follow. It feels weird, but it’s not weird. Here’s why. Many people in your wide circle of influence may not even know about your business. Tell them and ask for their support. They will either give you a quick like or follow or they won’t. That’s okay. Additionally, you will quickly start to receive referrals from friends who want to support you. They will send other people your way. Make sure to thank them.
Take time to support other small businesses and comment on their posts. When you engage with others, they will naturally engage with you. Like posts, share posts and tag the owner, comment and reply to comments. It doesn’t take a lot of time to engage on social media.
Action steps:
On Facebook, ask for all of your contacts to like and follow your small business Facebook page. Just do it.
The post you created in the action steps above showing all your social media information, share it in stories again.
Spend 15 minutes engaging on posts relevant to your small business. Share to your stories, comment or reply to comments.
Provide excellent customer service. Social media makes it fairly easy to quickly respond to comments, messages and other inquiries online. Without allowing social media to take over your life, make it a goal to respond within a certain time frame to anyone with a question. As your online presence or business grows, you may have to delegate this job to someone else who can respond in a timely manner. You will not be able to answer every question or help every person, but you can provide a courteous response in a timely manner.
Get the most accurate data. Social media platforms make it easy to see where your followers are engaged and where they aren’t. Track this data and use it to your advantage.
