FOMO & Social Media Marketing for Every Holiday Sale…and steps for the next one

Retrain your brain to think “it’s never too late!” We’ve laid out 6 easy steps to get you ready for the new year and a better planning year!

Let’s say your business is fairly new. Maybe you started your business in the last three to six months, even. Suddenly you wake up and realize you missed Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday – and you haven’t even finished your coffee yet.

You sit for 10 minutes having a moment where thoughts of failure swirl in your head. And now? Now it’s time to snap out of it.

You may have FOMO (fear of missing out). You may have in fact, missed out. We are here to tell you – it’s not the end of the world. It’s not the end of your business. It’s not the end of your social media success. It’s one tool in your belt – for next year.

We recently covered the importance of an annual marketing calendar. If you haven’t purchased one or decided on one to use, make that decision now. Don’t procrastinate. Get it done.

Our favorites for a social media marketing calendar can be purchased online.

A free option is using a really simple Google calendar and you can print out each month to write it out in advance and then transfer to digital format as you have time.

Now that you have your calendar, it’s really important to take 30 minutes now and plan for your sales days next year. Your business might only participate in one of the days following Thanksgiving. Decide which one is the best for your business and then make plans to capitalize on it next year.

Step 1: Order your calendar. (in case you didn’t already)

Step 2: Mark the dates of the sales you will utilize in your business.

Step 3: Work back 6 weeks from that date to begin planning your marketing content.

Step 4: Plan your marketing content to include sale information each week leading up to the sale date.

Step 5: Plan your marketing content for the week of to remind your customers each day of the sale and what’s included.

Step 6: Work to create the content for each of those days.

Now that you have plans for next year’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, you can quickly and easily plan for the social media marketing of 2022.

Think in terms of your business and how you can use any specific day to your advantage. Headed into 2022, some of the most common holidays include:

  • MLK, Jr. Day

  • President’s Day

  • Valentine’s Day

  • St. Patrick’s Day

  • Easter

  • Mother’s Day

  • Father’s Day

This is a time to think strategically about the year ahead and what is relevant to your business. There are some industries where every day is a sale day. You can fine tune what matters to your business specifically.

As a small business owner, you will often have to be your own motivation. You will have to encourage yourself and not get distracted by what every other business is doing. It’s easy to be a “consumer” and watch from the sidelines. It’s much more challenging to stand up, stand out and be a “producer.”

Don’t let fear of missing out get you down. Use it to plan what works for your unique business and craft your social media message accordingly. You can do it!
