Social Media Marketing Fatigue: 5 Ways to Get Unstuck(6 min read)

As a social media consumer, you may notice from time to time that you grow tired of content on a particular platform or from a brand specifically. It can happen at any point during the year. Social media fatigue occurs when consumers grow tired of meaningless content that doesn’t spark their interest or prompt a response. Social media fatigue also occurs when brands get stuck in a rut and lose their authenticity with posting. Posting the same types of content daily may feel right to you as a brand owner, but social media can be fickle. Consumers want to be entertained.

There are different types of consumers on social media. There are brands, influencers, consumers who post regularly, consumers who repost other content, and just consumers. Additionally, each individual may move from one category to another occasionally.

How do you determine social media marketing fatigue is the issue as a brand owner?

 

  • Loss of motivation to continue engaging

  • Seeing no results

  • Losing followers

  • Lack of engagement

  • Withdrawal from social media

When social media fatigue hits, it’s actually a combination of factors between both the brand and the consumer. Whether it’s the chicken or the egg first, it’s hard to tell. The answer is to keep engaging but to vary the strategy or implementation.

Let’s look at five ways to help get unstuck with social media marketing fatigue.

1. Step away with a plan to work on fresh ideas.

2. Read content (book, blog, other) on your field of work.

3. Spend time doing something that encourages your best/fresh ideas.

4. Be creative and authentic.

5. Look for fresh influencers to spark creativity

Step away with a plan in place to work on fresh ideas.

This first step will seem difficult, but it’s essential. A recent podcast created by influencer Dani Austin touched on this idea. De-Influenced with Dani Austin is a fresh podcast created in March 2023, touching on all aspects of Dani’s influencer career of 10 years. Dani’s influencer husband, Jordan, asked her if she felt she could take a break and return without losing followers. (This is a paraphrase of the question and answer). Her answer was interesting because her short answer was no, even with 1.7 million followers. The entire podcast is worth a listen, so click the link above, but the question and answer is around 27-30 minutes.

 Stepping away strategically can be done. Plan a week of content in advance. It can be the same volume of content typically used or a slightly less amount of content. Create the content. Schedule the content on Meta. Stop for a second because the next step is important…step away from your business account for a designated amount of time. If you’ve created one week of posts, step away for a week. Time away is necessary to reflect and refresh your mind.

Read content on your field of work.

Pick up a book, find a new blog, or look for articles on your chosen field to read, learn and grow. Everyone has heard, “Readers are leaders.” Look to be a leader in your chosen field. Part of that is learning from others. A quick search on your chosen field on Amazon should provide many great reading ideas for you to get started. Additionally, look up websites from other leaders in your field, find their blog or newsletter page, and start reading. Grab a notebook or notepad and make notes as you go. Write down quotes, write down ideas, and look for ways to generate new helpful content. Most of the time, information that helps you will also be information that helps others. Nothing is off-limits. Write down everything that resonates with you and any new ideas that come up.

Spend time doing something that encourages your best/fresh ideas.

People often have a time of day or an activity that enables them to think with clarity, purpose, and creativity. For some, it’s during a great workout session, a long run or walk, or a long drive. You likely already know where your best thinking occurs. Spend time doing that every single day of your social media break and take notes by whatever method works for you. At the gym, take a notepad. On a run or drive, use your phone memo feature. Write down all thoughts and ideas.

Be creative and authentic.

As notes and ideas are written down, look for ways to share that information authentically with your followers. Establish your brand and platform as one of help, encouragement, authenticity, and creativity. Consider the people you follow and make notes of why you follow their content at all.

Look for fresh influencers to spark creativity.

It’s possible to consume content to spark creativity. Take some time to find new influencers you don’t currently follow to encourage new ideas for your content. This is not a suggestion to copy anyone; it’s a suggestion to spark creativity for you.

Social media fatigue is common, especially if you are trying to do it all yourself as a business owner. Wearing many hats can be challenging, even when you love what you’re doing.
